Tongue and Pencil

In response to Chris Fason's post about Super Art Fight (below), I'll bring up another inspiring event, which also involves putting cartoonists in the limelight.

My buddy Chris Prynoski runs an animation studio in L.A. (and also in NYC now), called Titmouse, Inc. They've started putting on a show called the Titmouse Tongue & Pencil. So called because, while a stand-up performs, a cartoonist draws funny drawings in response to what he says, and the cartoons are projected behind the comedian in real time. Sometimes, the two forces clash, and sometimes they collude. Potential hilarity, either way.
A Tongue & Pencil video - slow starting, but gets pretty good.

In the past, cartoonists performed live by way of vaudeville chalk talks. Maybe now they're wanting to take the stage again. Maybe we should think about bringing something like Super Art Fight to B'ham, or something like the Tongue & Pencil show, or some similar new invention of our own. Thoughts, anyone?

This should definitely be on the docket for the next Slam.

Also, here's an older article about Jim Mahfood's style of live art graffiti and funk jams: http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=7835

We may be able to set something up with Kingdom Comics (maybe not AT Kingdom Comics, but they know how to put on events..). I'm supposed to call Stan this afternoon. He wants to shoot for something in February. Who would be interested in participating?

I think I'd want to participate, but it might depend on exactly what form it takes. What I'd be much less excited about is all the time-consuming production, planning, and publicizing that could be required. So maybe you, Stan, or whoever's most enthused could take charge of all that. Although I'd be happy to brainstorm and gives lots of input.

We might need to have a trial run to make sure we've got all our ducks in a row first. Also, who's bringing the ducks, and how are we gonna keep them in a row?

Yeah, I'm not sure exactly where we want to take this as far as event proceedings go. I like the "battle" aspect of the Super Art Fight guys as well as audience participation; throwing out ideas to challenge the artists. I'm hoping we can get interested parties together for a sit-down while we're in the planning stages. I'll let everyone know what's going through Stan / Kingdom Comics' mind after I talk w/ him later today.

Sounds very interesting. I would be interested in participating in a live art battle. Let us know when the planning sit down comes up.

I talked to Stan at Kingdom. He just wanted to see if February would be a good time because it's generally a slow time of the year for events. All the post-holiday buzz has died down and people are back in their routines. It'll also be a good dry run before Imagicon in May where we'll definitely be able to have a live art style event. I'll make a new post when I have some info; I'm definitely going to try and help make something happen.
