Salty 'Ham Comic Jam 003

I got together the other day with our fellow SHC Chris Rosko for another 2-man comic jam. We met at Barnes and Noble, and here's the goofy thing that came out of it:

Rosko drew panels 1, 3, 5, 7, & 9; and I drew the rest. Except, we collaborated on the last panel. As we were wrapping up, we starting talking about what was going to happen and trying to agree on an ending. Is that allowed? I don't know. If that's how it's supposed to work, shouldn't we have done that from the start?

Anyway, we agreed on how to end it and that we should collaborate on the last panel. So I drew G-Northrax and the cherry in the last panel, and Rosko drew the final Lieutenat Colonel Electron.

Salty 'Ham Slam!

We're on! The first official Salty 'Ham Slam is scheduled for June 28th, 2009, from 2 - 5pm. We'll have it at the Boardroom at the Levite Jewish Community Center of Birmingham. If you haven't been there, click HERE for a map. It's like the Y, except it's the J.

All members of the Salty 'Ham Cartooneestas are invited to attend. Bring your sketchbooks, recent drawings, etc., if you want to show off to your peers. Make sure you have some blank pages to draw on, if you want to sit around drawing with the rest of us.

I picture this get-together as an informal meet-and-greet. However, if you feel we have important issues to discuss, let me know, and I'll put them on the agenda. Yes, we could have an agenda! We could even form committees! But we should probably just stick to drawing cartoons and comics, I guess. Or maybe we could solve world hunger.

Snacks will be provided, in the form of . . . I don't know, cookies and sodas or something. If anybody wants to help me with this, please volunteer in the comments below, or email me. Some rooms at the J are kept totally kosher, but the Boardroom (which we'll be using) is just "kosher sensitive." This means no shellfish, and you can't mix your meat and dairy. So we should be safe with the cookie plan, if nobody brings those awful Pepperidge Farm Shrimp Twists.

When they were putting our event on the schedule, and I said it was called "The Salty 'Ham Slam," the lady said we'd better just skip the ham. No pork, you know. So she just entered it in the computer as the Salty Slam Meeting. Hence, the image above.

Let's all thank our fellow SHC Garth Potts for providing us this nice, private space, where there won't be a bunch of normal civilian-types constantly bugging us with questions. "Arre y'aaalll cawr-toooonist-ists?"

I'll send out an email or an evite or something soon, to make sure all the members hear about this. Thanks, everyone, for letting me know you want to actually come out of your houses and compare notes and such.

Quick Links

I've just added the Quick Links page to the Salty 'Ham site. There's a button that takes you right to it, in the little navigation area on the left side of the site.

The aim of this is that, now that you know who your favorite SHC's are, you can quickly check in on their blogs, deviantART pages, etc., all from one page. Does anybody besides me think this will be helpful?

If you'd like your entry on the Quick Links page to be changed in any way, let me know. I tried to keep it very simple, for ease of use.

I'm thinking about adding another page, called Other Links or Outside Faves, or something like that. There, we could all contribute to a list of our favorite non-Alabama art blogs, online comics, and other related stuff like that there. Or should I even bother with that?

Salty 'Ham Slam! (planning)

A whole bunch of our esteemed (and not so esteemed) members have piped up in support of Ali's suggestion that we have a gathering. If I had known there'd be so much enthusiasm for this, maybe I'd have tried to organize something sooner.

We've heard from Ali Marceau, Chris Fason, Jamison Harper, Mark Martin, Joe Attaway, Brandon McCullar, Christopher Davis, Kirk Creel, Tim Rocks, Andrew Willmore, Sam McDavid, Derek Anderson, and Pat Snow. They didn't ALL say they'd try to make it, but a bunch of them did.

Let's do a Saturday afternoon at 3:00. That way, we might get more folks who work weekdays. I have to go to the darn beach for a week, from maybe the 13th to the 20th or something. So let's say Saturday, June 27th, at 3pm. Anybody got a huge problem with that? Comment in the comments below, or send me an email.

Here's what you might see when you arrive:

Let's consider this a stand alone event, for now. If we get a good group and have a lot of fun, we can turn it into a monthly get together or something. Later, people can try to rally cartooneestas for zoo trips, figure drawing classes, or whatever else.

Everybody bring your sketchbooks or sketches, so we can look at each other's stuff. And make sure you have some blank pages in there, so we can draw stuff, and draw in each other's sketchbooks, or whatever we're going to do.

I think the tone should be very informal, and we should all just shake hands, grin, and crap like that. If anybody wants to get on a soapbox and make an announcement or a speech, that's allowed. But others are allowed to throw vegetables, etc.

So let's talk more about possible locations. Folks have mentioned: The Hoover library, Greencup Books, maybe?, the downtown library, Chinatown restaurant (Southside), Taj India (Southside), Bottletree, Kingdom Comics, or Southern Progress. Let's keep thinking, and hopefully we can settle on something soon.

Crazy Ideas! Yes? No?

Hey guys!

Hoping you are all doing well and being productive. And escaping this heat! Oh my goodness. 5 years and I'm still not used to it.

Anyway, because there's an actual point to this post, I'm gonna get into it.
One of the great things about having a group of artists in an area are the awesome opportunities you get to not just hang out, but learn from each other! The time that I improved over the shortest amount of time was when I spent every weekend with a local group in the San Fran area called B.A. A.U. , short for Bay Area Artists Unite.
B. A.A.U. was just a group of artists, just like us, who shared a common interest in comics, cartooning, and animation. Some of them attended my school, others were completely self taught, and ALL of us loved hanging out.
We would sit in an open area of a mall in Japantown and, well...draw!
Doing this, we shared methods, taught discoveries and different ways to do things. Those who weren't in school learned things the art students learned in class, and we all encouraged each other to keep drawing. Essentially we taught each other to improve.
I think it was this group and doing things like this that I miss the most about California. I made lasting friendships and saw my skill skyrocket. Just because I was having fun!

I suppose the point of this long winded proposal (I can write novels sometimes), is wondering what you all thought about doing something like this?
It, of course, doesn't have to be every week, maybe once a month or once every other month. Doesn't mean there can't be any "unofficial" meets if people want to get together more than that.

The Hoover Library, where my boyfriend currently works in the Children's Department, has opened up their Plaza, which not only houses a quiet reading room, bookstore, and coffee shop, but also is a wonderful place to sit and do things, and has ample room for something like this. I spend a lot of time here just to get out of the house. :D
Now, we likely won't be able to reserve an area, but I also know that there is nothing that states we cant meet up on our own either. And because Josh works there (Hopefully I will be as well soon! Fingers crossed!) I will know ahead of time if there are any library programs happening in the Plaza, so we can figure out a time to gather where we wont be stepping on peoples toes.

I would have no problem gathering more information, as well as looking into things people wish to learn more about (like figure drawing and anatomy, or computer programs, or different media to work with).
This, of course, all depending on what you guys think and if it sounds interesting to anyone. So let me know! You guys have any ideas, too? Speak up! We've all got nothing to lose and a lot to gain!

Stay cool, 'Bamians!

possible seasonal job?

Hey, all. Did you know that your fellow Salty 'Ham Cartooneesta Tim Rocks just did a stint as a caricaturist at the Alabama Adventure Theme Park? Well, he did. And now, for whatever reason, he has parted ways with them. I'm thinking they might be looking for somebody to fill the position, so if anybody's interested in caricature work this summer, you might ought to give them a call!

Tim, if you feel like filling folks in on what it's like to draw those Alabama Adventurers, maybe you could do so in the comments below.

Ptooey & Loogie - The Mommy of All Hiccups, early pencil draft

My college chum Cheese Hasselberger publishes House of Twelve comics. He said I could contribute something to their upcoming kids' anthology, so I'm working on a 4-page Ptooey and Loogie story. Here it is in progress (click each page to enlarge) --

What do y'all think of this?

I plan to tweak the drawings a bit more, add gutters between the panels, and ink it all nice-like. I may change out some of the hiccup cure gags in the first half of page 2, so if anybody has ideas for improvements in that department, let me know.

As you probably know, Ptooey & Loogie were invented for the use of all Salty 'Ham Cartooneestas. Maybe if we collectively do enough stuff with them, we could set up a web-comic or self-publish something.

Cousin Cliff

Here's a post about Cousin Cliff. He and my aunt Jane were big influences on me when I was a tot. I only knew Cousin Cliff through TV, but he still inspired me to draw.

... and the hits just keep on comin'.

ANOTHER new SHC! (coincidentally, like the last one, also from Pelham)

Introducing: Alison Marceau

Alison's the first one to take full advantage of the new "you can put up seven pictures" rule, and I think it makes her page look quite snazzy. You've got a lot of great work there, Ali!

sidebar shenanigans

I couldn't figure out how to get SHC Lee Long's Flash animation to work on his page, so I let him put it here, in the sidebar (scroll down on the left, if you didn't see it). I reckon all y'all could showcase Flash animations down there, if you want. Just put them up online somewhere, and I can link them, the way I did his.

For some reason, I can see Lee's little jumping cat when I view the page in Firefox, but not in Safari. What's up with that?

. . . and Lee just sent me this awesome portrait of me as Frankenstein's monster! I'm flattered, because the monster is actually very smart, in the original book.

Hey! - a :: WAyBaCk MaChINe :: for real.

Dang!
Dead websites are now brought back to life.
...

Have you ever said to yourself, "dog-gone-it, self, I sure do wish that I would have kept a copy of those cartoon files that I created for www old-client-of-mine.com.net.org!", if you are like me you probably say it, on a regular basis.
I was searchin' for some of my old art files online & came across the web archive, very cool.
I even found one of my old websites, it's been dead for years, WOW!

The fantastic people at Internet Archive, must have said it to themselves too, and found a solution. It is called the wayBack Machine and it freakin' Rocks Dude!
Just point your browser to www.archive.org/web/web.php to see what you can find.

Sio addendum

I've decided, now that we have the new SHC web site, that all y'all can have up to 7 images on your page . . . instead of just 3. So everybody let me know if you want to add some more pics.

Sio already changed out some of her old art and added more: Sio's SHC page.

First Post!

*firstly, thankyou Chris! :)
Sio here, and this is my first blog post, tho I've been following it for some time. I've enjoyed seeing what all yall cartooneestas are up to, along with all the artistic Alabama happenings.
As for myself, I've been up to my eye-balls in the rigors of art college at good ol' UM, working towards my BFA, but also dabbling in my own little comic work on the side. It's a fan-comic and completely for fun, but it's fantastic practice and I love every minute of working on it. (I've just breached the 3rd chapter!)
PFFbySIO.deviantart.com is where it's at and I invite you to swing by and check it out if you have the time! I'll be sure to announce when major updates are made.

Besides that, I wish you all a pleasent Summer!

New SALTY 'HAM CARTOONEESTAS Web Site!

I've just set up a slightly spiffier web site, for the main Salty 'Ham Cartooneestas page. It's nothing extremely special. I'm not really web savvy at all, so I just put it together using Google Sites. But it's nice because, instead of being a blog, where everybody's stuff is all on one long list, it now has actual separate pages. Also, it has a simpler url, which is much easier to say and remember: SaltyHam.org

There's still a long list going down the Cartooneestas page, but it's a little easier to digest, because there's just a thumbnail image representing each cartooneesta. I made these thumbnail images by assembling three old pieces from each artist. If you'd like to use something else for your thumbnail, instead of the quick collage I threw together for you, let me know. I know I want to make something special for my own thumbnail, when I can get around to it.

The old site is defunct now; it just links to the new site. Please, if you've linked to the old site somewhere on your own sites, change that link to go to SaltyHam.org.

If anybody has any suggestions for extra pages or features I should add to the new site, fire away. Also, now's a good time to review your page there. If it has any bad links, please tell me. If you'd like to change out your images or blurbs in any way, I'm happy to do it. Just email me: cgarrison[at]bham.rr.com

(Here on the Salty 'Ham Jam, the links within posts, that are supposed to go to the cartooneestas' pages, will no longer work. Maybe I can go through and fix those up a little bit, day by day, whenever time permits.)

addendum, the following week: ( . . . And now I have fixed those links.)

another Final Broadcast

Remember how SHC Brian Ratigan has that public access cable show, Final Broadcast? Well, don't forget to catch a new episode, tomorrow night! I'm told this one will have a bunch of animation, including the stop-motion puppet shorts I did back in college. (You can also see them on my youtube channel, but why be so new-fangled, when you can use an actual TELE-VISION MACHINE?)  There will also be something by SHC Sam McDavid.

Salty 'Ham Comic Jam 002

Salty 'Ham Comic Jam 001 resulted in The Secret Sorcerer, starring Ptooey and Loogie (final version on this blog, HERE, or read it on my comicspace page, HERE).

Here's Salty 'Ham Comic Jam 002 (as always, click to enlarge):

Goofy, but fun. Here's what happent:

On Friday afternoon, I invited Tim Rocks to join me at Barnes & Noble to try a spontaneous, 2-man comic jam. Over chocolate chip cookies, we agreed on a few rules. We decided that you can make your panel as big or as small as you like, and that you can suddenly decide that yours is the last panel of the story at any time. You can try to conform with the other guy's drawing style and story ideas, or you can throw them out the window, if you want.

I brought some pencils, and Tim brought a nice fat marker that he wanted to use. I thought the marker, although fun, was too fat to draw the small details I wanted to put in. So I alternated between the marker and a regular black pen I happened to have.

I drew the first panel, based on my experience of that morning, having visited Tarrant. We alternated panels of course, so I drew panels 1, 3, 5, and 7; Tim drew panels 2, 4, 6, and 8. I had anticipated that Slay-go would probably decapitate the little dog, or cut him in two, after which Plunky might appear and exact her revenge. But Tim subverted the violence in panel 6, and again in panel 8. At that point, I had a hard time figuring out what we might do next. I suggested that panel 8 actually kind of worked as a kooky ending, and Tim agreed, adding "The End!" at the bottom. So that's why the story comes to a rather abrupt stop.

Nevertheless, I quite enjoyed working on it, and I think it's a fun read, and that it was worth doing. I think having two artists, instead of a whole bunch, probably helps the story stay at least a little bit more focused, as opposed to comic jams with more people, in which the stories are often all over the place. Hopefully I can organize more fun jams like this one in the future.

FCBD this Saturday!!!

I won't be around but be sure to hit up the local comics shops for Free Comic Book Day! Kingdom Comics in Vestavia always is great for throwing down on FCBD and I've heard that AstroBrain in Pelham may have local artists (give 'em a yell if you want to participate) and stuff. Oh, and FREE COMICS!!!

As for me, I'll be in Greensboro, NC doing free sketches and signing Hero Happy Hours as well as this that night:

A Flying McDavid Brother

Look, y'all, at our newest member: Sam McDavid. You may know him as one of the Flying McDavid Brothers, creators of many hilarious, well-loved, animated shorts, done for the Sidewalk Scramble. There are 3 cartoons in Sam's SHC post, and here's another'n:

Asclepius Fandango

SHC Chris Rosko has a hand in making some of the Flying McDavid Bros. cartoons, as well.

fason's imagicon report

[as seen on my deviantart and facebook pages - this is a show we should really get behind and support. there is definitely a 2010 imagicon in the works and i think there's a very good shot at having a "cartooneestas island" or "alley" next year at a reasonable price per cartooneesta if enough of us are interested]

Okay, Imagicon is over and done with but things look promising for Version 2 in 2010... To start, a tiny bit of history... Last year, Birmingham hosted an event called Omegacon. While successful in terms of buzz and volume, Omegacon was a colossal flop in terms of general organization and management. In fact, if not for Omegacon's loyal volunteer base, the con could have easily folded w/in hours of opening to the public. Celebrities were mis-managed, funds were not used intelligently, and chaos was the rule of the day. However, those amazingly loyal and hardworking volunteers decided that there had to be a better way to do this. And this year with Imagicon, they did it. While probably not as well attended as Omegacon, Imagicon was a full success in achieving a relaxed and well-organized convention. I had initially intended not to attend this show. However, my friends at Kingdom Comics [http://kingdomcomics.comicnet.net/] (who are a sponsor and most likely future partner to Imagicon) invited me in as a guest. I trust Kingdom, so I figured "why not?" and accepted their invitation...

That out of the way, here's how things went for me. :D

Friday - I missed most of Friday because I decided not to take time off of work. I arrived a bit after 5:00 and set up shop at Kingdom Comics' booth. I did a couple character drawings just to see if anyone would bite. Knowing that Friday wouldn't be a giant sales day, I wandered the con checking out the dealers and looking for friends. I found The Wandering Men [http://www.wanderingmen.com/], who are friends of mine, and sat in in on a "Developing Your Art Style" panel that one of The Wandering men, Brannon Hall was on along with Billy Tackett [http://www.billytackett.com/], Bryan King [http://www.neo-earth.com/], James Hill [http://www.darkdaysartist.deviantart.com/], and Nigel Sade [http://www.nigelsade.com/]. It wasn't a heavily attended panel (a Friday thing) but it was fun to watch and interact with these guys.

Saturday - Emergency Alarm Day. TWICE, the fire alarm / emergency alarm system was activated, resulting in one full exodus of the civic center. Thank you, Idiot-Who-Thought-Smoking-In-The-Bathroom-Would-Be-A-Good-Idea-Lad. Otherwise, Saturday was a very productive day. There was plenty of traffic and I did a good number of commissions and sold copies of "Hero Happy Hour" and raffle tickets (for a set of HHHs). At 6:00, I had a "Selling Your Soul To Satan is Easier than Breaking into Comics" panel with the aforementioned Bryan King and James Hill as well as Sarah White [http://www.shira-chan.deviantart.com/], Jamie Cottle [http://www.comicspace.com/jamie_cottle/] (I'm sure there's a better site for Jamie, but I don't know it), Bobby Nash [http://www.bobbynash.com/], and Sean Taylor [http://taylorverse.com]. It was an extraordinarily fun panel with creators with varying levels of experience in the comics industry. We quite possibly changed the world that day... (sniff)

Sunday - I didn't STOP drawing all day. I even had to skip a contest I was considering entering in lieu of the list of commissions I had lined up. A very good day. And the raffle was fun too. I should have made a big deal out of it and a fool out of myself and had more fun with it but I was soooo tired by then.

Anyways, overall, I had an excellent time of myself and met lots of great people and maybe even made a few new fans of my work. Mucho props and thanks to the organizers, staff, volunteers, and sponsors who made this a very fun and exhausting (in a good way) event. Rawk.
